Trying Something New Leads
to Big Things — Olivia DePiore
Olivia DePiore, 29, of Twinsburg, has been modeling for the past 10 years. It all started when she was shopping for a dress for homecoming and a woman from the boutique asked her if she was interested in modeling. DePiore, who had never modeled before, walked in a fashion show — which became the start of many shows, photoshoots and competitions. She has traveled to fashion capitals around the world, including walking in Paris Fashion Week. For DePiore, each time she walks a runway, appears in a magazine and makes a personal appearance, she is showing the world that we should include all people, and break the norms and barriers.
“I have seen her blossom and grow much more than the directives/explanations we were given when she was born and with society,” says Vicky DePiore, Olivia’s mom. “I truly believe you need to give any individual opportunities…just like anyone else.”
Since Olivia has been modeling, Vicky DePiore has seen more possibilities for inclusion of people with disabilities.
“We get called on an average of at least three times a week from all over the world,” she says. “Some are parents who want me to ‘teach’ them how to do it. Some are other individuals like her who want to know her better or talk with her about her modeling and confidence. Olivia has been asked to judge fashion shows, which takes her efforts to a whole new level.”
Olivia DePiore’s advice for those who may be hesitant to start something new is to try something that just stretches you a little bit and then make it a little bigger the next time.
