Inclusive Playground at Hollstein Reservation

The Inclusive Playground and Splash Pad are located within Hollstein Reservation behind the Amherst HealthPlex. There are approximately 100 unique playgrounds around the country today for children with developmental disabilities. Some focus on water play, others focus on structured play or natural play. With the outdoor play area, our goal is to combine the three types of play into one exciting playground so children of all abilities can play with their family.

Admission to the Inclusive Playground and outdoor Splash Pad is $2 per person. Please purchase daily passes inside the Amherst HealthPlex.

ABOUT THE PLAYGROUND

Splash Pad

What better way to cool off in the summer months than to play in a large water play area? Children of all ages and abilities will be able to use the area and enjoy the play features. The water area has different settings to accommodate children with different developmental disabilities. Children in wheelchairs are able to use ponchos to protect the wheelchair as they roll through one water feature after another. Water that sprays up can also be shut off for children in wheelchairs or using walkers. With a schedule of when to activate different settings, the water play area is a fun place for children to enjoy.

Structured Play Areas

Swings – What play area would be complete without swings? The swingset is equipped for children in wheelchairs and other developmental disabilities.

Sand Pit – Children can let their imagination run wild in the sand box. The area is covered, allowing children to play for hours without fear of sunburn.

Fishing Pond – The playground has a stocked pond, where children can fish. An accessible dock makes it easy for children with wheelchairs to reach the water’s edge.

Natural Play Areas

Living Willow Hut – Imagine running through a canopy of willows. This hut is open on both ends to allow easy walk-through. Children in wheelchairs are able to access the hut on a trail.

Slide – An in-ground slide gives children with developmental disabilities the ability to go down the slide safely without having to climb a ladder.

Stage – A place for children to express their artistic side, the stage is open for any and all to use.
