Red Oak Behavioral Health

The Pastoral Counseling Service of Summit County, Inc. is incorporated as a private non-profit organization in the state of Ohio. It operates its mental health services under the certification of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and is authorized to provide diagnostic assessment, counseling/psychotherapy and med/somatic services, and community psychiatric support treatment. PCS is a Medicaid only contract to the Summit County Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board. It is also an affiliate agency of the Division of Church and Society in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, part of the Lutheran Services of America.

Pastoral Counseling Service is centrally located in downtown Akron, one block from a Regional Transit Authority bus stop and in the middle of two major metropolitan hospital centers (Childrenrsquos Hospital Medical Center of Akron and Akron General Medical Center). Referrals are typically from the Summit County area but also come from surrounding counties. The central office for PCS, located at 282 West Bowery Street, is handicap accessible. The agency provides TDD equipment for deaf or hearing disabled individuals upon request. Additionally, the agency will contract with a client chosen or independent sign language interpreter when a hearing disabled individual presents for services.

The major project of The Pastoral Counseling Service is the School-Based Therapy Program. PCS has been partnered with Akron Public Schools Woodridge School District Barberton Local Schools and the Imagine Alternative School. Within these programs PCS offers clinical services to children and families struggling with mental health issues.

The activities associated with the School-Based Program include assessment/evaluation, individual and group therapy, consultation with school personnel, advocacy and referral, and medical/psychiatric treatment. The programrsquos benefits stretch beyond convenience to include the opportunity to resolve conflicts when they occur, impact the childrsquos ability to succeed academically, emotionally and behaviorally, and advocate for a child within the schoolrsquos setting.
